Judging each other is not seen as a crime, but is like a virus that eats away on its host, it even goes as far as to contaminate others while on its path, destroying lives. This destructive behavioral characteristic did not just begin now but had deceitfully crept into existence throughout the dawn of history: while men were on the verge trying to find comfort and stability within the heart of self-centeredness.
Within the confinement of this article, I will illustrate and elaborate on the perils; and dangers that judging each other can cause. I will also reference and quote most of my information from the Holy Bible.
Throughout history, since the falling of man (Roman 3:23), many innocent people have been scarred by this virus, we will call (judging others). Many individuals go through this episode of (been judged by others) for different reasons.
Within society, the law outlines a person as innocent of any crime until he/she is proven guilty, but on the other hand, we tend to judge others on the merit of what we see or hear without even knowing the circumstances surrounding the situation.
On every level, superficial judgments are wrong, according to the Bible (John 7:24) passing judgment on others basing solely on appearance is a sin. It’s foolish to conclude a matter, before even investigating the facts (Proverb 18:3). I usually ask myself, what may cause a person to be judgmental?
According to (Roman 12:16 amplified version), Paul states that no one person is better than another, “Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (conceited self-important, exclusive), but an association with humbly people (those with a realistic self-view.” Do not overestimate yourself. Let’s not judge foolishly base on what we think about another because most of the time this might not be true, and only cause hurt.
As I research on this topic, I realized that two of the most fundamental reason why this virus (judging others) seems more rampant in today’s society are:
1. False advertising- At an early age, most people (especially in the western world) believe (because of deceptive advertisement) that they have to dress a certain way, drive a specific car, and live in a particular house, act a certain way. When in real essence, we don’t have to do such a thing. The truth is that we have believed a lie from a self-seeking society, which has its self-centered agenda.
2. The second point is subconscious revenge- Many people become judgmental because they are (subconsciously or not) giving back to others what have received in the past. When others pass judgment to scar an individual emotionally, if it isn’t corrected, it will drive that person to a point, wherein he/she loses their self-esteem. So for them to regain some freedom or feel some form of peace, they have to treat others in a judgmental manner. (Most times subconsciously)
Elizabeth Gaskell wrote a great quote that says “how easy it is to judge rightly after one sees what evil comes from judging wrongly.”
You must never think you know everything, only one person knows all, and that is God, as the scriptures said he is past finding out (Roman 11:33). One thing that should be considered is that most times when a person suffers because of circumstances beyond their control. It does not always mean that he/she did or didn’t do something, but most times it’s just a test, which in the end will build character, enabling he/her to endure and excel in life.
Finally, if you take a moment and look deep into one’s own self, then you would realize that all of us come from one source (Created by God Genesis 1:27). And to that source shall we return. So, in light of this, let us show love and kindness one towards another. And not too quick to judge another based on one’s own merits or misfortune; because most of the time we might have already done or may even do worse than what we are condemning or judging another person off.
