Walking in a covenantal relationship– I am here as an oracle of God to hold your hand and help you to understand how to walk in a covenantal relationship with God.
I will ask you these questions
What is the state of your relationship with God?
Would you say your relationship with God is perfect?
Would you say that your relationship with God should be better? Or would you say that your relationship with God needs more work on your part?
2 Chronicles 7:1-4,11-16
To walk in a covenantal relationship with the Lord, you must walk in the power of His word. The Kingdom of God is embedded in truth and love. The kingdom is about unity and not division.
The kingdom of God is about relationships, not just any relationship, but a God-instituted covenantal relationship girded on truth and love, and most important is that the Lord wants you for himself.
Exodus 20:3
‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me. ‘
Walking in partnership with God should not be just an idea or a thought, but it needs to become the reality of your existence. The Lord’s desire is for you and him to be best friends. He wants to be the one you look to and call on for help, protection, and guidance.
Where do you get your help from?
Who do you call on when it seems like all hell has broken loose in your life?
Let us look at some covenants that the made with those he called throughout history.
Genesis 5:24
‘And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. ‘
James 2:23
‘And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. ‘
Act 13:22
‘And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. ‘
Genesis 9:8-9
‘And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; ‘
Hebrews 8:10
‘For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: ‘
2 Corinthians 5:17
‘Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. ‘
The Lord wants to make a personal covenant with you that will be able to withstand the storms of Life.
A covenant that can override every arrow of the devil and his cohorts.
Romans 8:31
‘What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? ‘
So how do you establish and walk-in covenantal relationship with God
- First, you need to know and accept Jesus as your Lord and savior
Psalms 25:14
‘The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. ‘
Amos 3:3
‘Can two walk together, except they be agreed? ‘
- You need to make it your priority to hear the Lord and obey him
- You must develop a personal and intimate relationship with God, meaning he must become your everything. You must give him your heart in fasting, prayer, supplication, worship, praise, and adoration.
Revelation 2:4
‘Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. ‘
- Walk-in Faith with God
Hebrews 11:6
‘But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. ‘
Some people might doubt God in keeping and upholding his words. So, considering this, let us look at the effectiveness and the trustworthiness of God to uphold his word.
Many believe and behave as if the word of God is just like any other spoken word. This causes them to doubt the power and relevance of the word of God.
But Hebrews 4:12 tells us that ‘For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. ‘
We will look at three of these descriptive verbs mentioned in this verse to see how powerful the word of God is in a believer’s life.
How powerful it can be if it is applied correctly.
- Quick– the word is quick- meaning it is not slow to carry out its functions and purposes. As he speaks, whatever he speaks happens immediately. Let us look at Genesis 1:3
‘And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. ‘
As he spoke and what he spoke came to pass.
Maybe if he did it once, some people would dare to say it was a coincidence, but if you go through the rest of Genesis chapter one, you will repeatedly see that God spoke, and it came to pass immediately.
So, because of this, we know that his word will surely happen.
Matthew 24:35 ‘ Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. ‘
Isaiah 55:11, the Lord said, ‘So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. ‘
So, we must not doubt the word of God because it is sure to accomplish its purpose. It fulfills the purpose that it was sent out to do. So, the word is sure to manifest. The word of God will always work in you to accomplish God’s will for your life.
- Next, the word is powerful– powerful for what?
Psalms 119:9 ‘Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. ‘
So, the word of God is powerful to cleanse a young man’s way. The word is powerful enough to align your way for it to become God’s ways.
Psalms 119:130 ‘The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. ‘
The word of God is not only powerful to bring about the physical light in the world, but it is also powerful to give spiritual light and understanding to everyone who is in spiritual darkness.
It does not matter if a person is walking in spiritual darkness; the word of God has the power to trigger a fire in their spirit that no one can put out.
And this same word can give an understanding to a child of God, which cannot be denied. An understanding beyond this earth.
This was the same understanding that Joseph had, and it led him to become the governor of Egypt.
This was the same understanding that Solomon had, and he was the wisest man ever to live.
This was the same understanding Moses had, and God used him to overthrow the empire of Egypt.
This was the same understanding Joshua had, and we know he walked with a different spirit.
This was the same understanding David had, and he was a mighty king. That they could say, Saul, killed his thousands and David his ten thousand.
This was the same understanding Paul had, and God used him to turn cities upside down by preaching the Gospel.
God’s word is powerful enough to give you understanding that is beyond your years, that is beyond your capacity, that is beyond the understanding you were born with, that is beyond the understanding you get through your studies. I pray you will walk in this understanding.
- It is sharper than any two-edged sword– The word of God is powerful enough to pierce anything because it is sharper than any two-edged sword. Listen, God’s word is so powerful that scripture says it even can pierce the darkness.
In Genesis chapter one, it said that
‘And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light. ‘
I am here to tell you that no darkness can override the power of God’s word
There is no sickness, lack, barrenness, poverty, heartaches, stress, fear, witch, sorcerers, demons, destiny thieves, and robbers that the word of God is not powerful enough to fix.
Listen, God’s word is so powerful that even God himself magnified his words over all his names.
Psalms 138:2 ‘I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. ‘
Listen, God’s character is unchangeable. His words are sure and cannot be altered by anyone.
Now closing
The Lord requires his children to walk in a covenantal relationship with him. But at the same time, this relationship must be instituted and interwoven into the DNA of his written word.
Matthew 8:51 tells us the word of God is powerful enough to heal all sicknesses
John 8:51 tells us that the word is powerful enough to expel death. Even when people give up on you, the word can keep you so that you will live and not die.
Hebrews 1:3 tells us that the word of God is powerful enough to uphold everything. That means everything the Lord promised to you; he can see it through because all things are possible with God.
Luke 8:11 tells us that the word of God is a powerful seed, and what you do with it determines the outcome. That means if you neglect the word, it will not be able to do anything for you, but if you receive and protect it, the word will deliver and protect you from every storm.
If you are not walking in the truth of God’s words, you cannot walk in covenant with him because keeping the written word activates his covenant.
Listen, for the word of God to become powerful in your life, you must mix it with faith. And this faith is complete trust in the Lord and walking with him in fellowship.
Although the word is powerful on its own, it will not be effective in your life if it is not coupled with total faith in God.
Remember, you cannot add just any kind of faith, but it must be total trust and surrender to God. So whatever level of faith you have now, just pray, believe, and trust God’s word; your faith will grow over time into the great faith that God requires. And as you continue to partner and walk with God, He will give you what is needed to fulfill your destiny.
