In the journey of life, we often come across giants – not the kind you find in fairy tales, but big challenges that make us feel small and scared. Giants are those things that make our hearts pound and our knees shake. They are those things that seem to control our lives and make us feel like we are weak and unable to do anything. Giants, if we allow them to, can limit us from achieving our God-given purposes. But here is the good news: God is bigger than any giant we might face. He is mightier than anyone or anything that exalts itself against His knowledge in our lives.

In this article, we will explore what giants are in our lives, how they scare us, and a story about David and Goliath which teaches us that, with God, we can overcome any giant.

Understanding Giants in Our Lives

Giants are those big, tough problems or fears that seem too strong for us to handle. They can be anything from a scary sickness to worries about the future or the voices that relentlessly speak negative things to us. Giants make us anxious and afraid; they make us believe that we cannot face them alone. It is like standing in front of a mountain that we don’t know how to climb. Allow me to take you back to the childhood story about giants. Whenever we heard such stories, we were frightened and some of us even had nightmares when we went to sleep afterwards. And you can imagine that these weren’t real giants, they were just stories. How much more do you think a real giant can scare someone if just a story about them brings nightmares?

Giants have a way of scaring us. They make us feel small and powerless. It is like when you are about to take a big test, and you feel like you are not smart enough. Or when you are facing a tough decision, and it feels like there is no right answer. These are the giants in our lives – the things or people that make us want to run away and hide. Giants can also be like big bullies. They might not be people, but they make us feel bullied and pushed around. The giant could be a problem at school or work, or it could be a feeling of loneliness that won’t go away.

David and Goliath: A Story of Overcoming Giants

In the Bible, there is a story about a young boy named David who faced a giant named Goliath. Goliath was a big, strong warrior who scared everyone with his size and strength. The whole army was afraid to fight him. But David, a simple shepherd boy, trusted in God. 1 Samuel 17:23-24 (NIV) says, “As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.” This was a real giant; a scary man that made the whole land of Israelites run away in fear and agony. No one was ready to face him in battle, not even Israel’s best soldiers. The king had even offered to award the person who would destroy this giant but no one was ready to take up the task. But what is more interesting about this story is the young man who was fed up with the threats of this giant – David.

David did not have fancy armor or a powerful sword, but he had something more important – faith in God. With just a sling and a stone, David faced the giant. In 1 Samuel 17:45 (NIV), David said to Goliath, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” David won not by his might or strength but by trusting in the spirit of the Lord. Giants, most especially spiritual giants, cannot be fought with power and might. Rather, they are conquered through the help of the Spirit of the Lord. The Bible says that we are more than conquerors through Christ; He is the one who grants us victory against the giants in our lives.

Just like David faced his giant with faith, we can trust that God is bigger than any giant in our lives. No matter how scared or anxious we feel, God is there to help us face our giants. He doesn’t want us to be afraid, but to trust in Him.

·        The Giant of Fear

Fear can be a giant that makes us freeze. It could be fear of the dark, fear of failure, fear of the future, fear of the high and mighty in society, or fear of what others think. But God says in Isaiah 41:10 (NIV), “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God’s righteous right hand is mightier than anything that seeks to instill fear in us. When anything or anyone tries to paralyze us, we should remember that God is with us and His mighty hand upholds us. God is not a respecter of persons nor is He defined by the things that happen in our lives. Therefore, we should not focus on the things or people that threaten us, but on the powerful hand that surrounds us.

·        The Giant of Loneliness

Feeling alone is a giant that many face. But God promises to be with us when our hearts are crushed and when our souls are wounded. Loneliness may seem like a small issue to many who have not yet experienced it. However, it is a very big giant that can cause depression and self-hatred. To overcome this giant, believers must recognize the unconditional love of God for them and fully embrace it. Psalms 103:17 (NIV) says, “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.” Knowing that God loves us and that we are precious in His sight can help us overcome the giant of loneliness.

·        The Giant of Sickness

Sickness can be a giant that scares us; from relentless headaches to allergies and chronic illnesses. But in Jeremiah 30:17 (NIV), God says, “But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord.” God is bigger than any sickness we may face; He is bigger than cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis, fibroids, COVID-19, and any other killer disease. When the devil speaks negative things to you concerning the sickness you are suffering from, remind Him of the power of God to heal and restore.

·        The Giant of Doubt

Doubting ourselves can be a giant that holds us back. Doubt makes us give a listening ear to the deceptive voices of the devil. He tells us that our situations are impossible, we cannot make it, and we cannot achieve what we desire. But God encourages us in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all this through him who gives us strength. With God, we can overcome doubt, we can shutter the voices of the devil, and make all lying spirits flee from our lives.

·        The Giant of Guilt

Guilt over past mistakes can feel like a giant we cannot escape. The devil uses this devil to manipulate us and prevent us from matching forward to where God wants us to be. But God assures us in 1 John 1:9 (NIV), “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” We can overcome the giant of guilt by confessing and repenting our sins, and believing that there’s no condemnation against us since Christ has cleansed us.

·        The Giant of Lack

Lack and insufficiency are giants that torment many families. They prevent people from starting businesses, taking their children to school, and settling bills, among other responsibilities. But these giants should not scare us and make us have sleepless nights. This is because we serve a God who owns the world and has promised to meet all our needs according to His glorious riches. Philippians 4:19 (NIV0 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” We can make this affirmation every time we feel like we are being weighed down by lack, financial burdens, and insufficiency.

Conclusion

No matter how big the giants in your life may seem, never forget that God is bigger. The story of David and Goliath teaches us that with faith in God, we can face our fears and overcome any challenge. Whether it’s the giant of fear, depression, sickness, lack, or guilt, God is there to help us. So, let us remember that we don’t face our giants alone. With God by our side, we can stand tall, face our fears, and trust that He is bigger than any giant we may encounter on our journey.
